Durban - The R12 000 fine imposed on a KwaZulu-Natal taxi driver for reckless driving was welcomed by community safety MEC Willies Mchunu on Thursday.

Lungisani Mxolisi Miyakho was arrested at the Umvoti toll plaza in May when he drove away after his taxi hit the back of another vehicle on the N2.

The KwaDukuza Magistrate's Court fined him R12 000 or nine months' imprisonment, said Mchunu's spokesman Kwanele Ncalane.

“I am very delighted at the court's decision to give him such a harsh sentence,” Mchunu said in a statement.

“This is an example to all motorists that such behaviour will not be tolerated.”

He thanked police for their help in bringing reckless drivers to justice, and said the department was taking a proactive attitude in dealing with transgressors on the province's roads. - Sapa
