Johannesburg - The Gauteng provincial government has condemned the fatal shooting of three people and wounding of seven at a Johannesburg taxi rank on Tuesday.

“The incident at the Wanderers taxi rank... has resulted in the death of innocent people,” Gauteng roads and transport MEC Ismail Vadi and community safety MEC Faith Mazibuko said in a statement.

It was believed the shooting occurred in a clash between two long-distance taxi associations.

Mazibuko said the violence defeated effort to promote road safety. Vadi called for a fast resolution to ensure that the safety of taxi operators and commuters was not jeopardised.

The three people killed were a taxi marshal and two passengers.

Captain Pinky Tsinyane said police were investigating. No arrests had been made. - Sapa
