Durban -

A Durban school teacher, who was charged with assault for forcing his pupils to walk on their knees on a tarred road, has handed himself over to police.

Police spokesman Thulani Zwane said the teacher was expected to appear in court on Tuesday.

The teacher, from Olwambeni Primary School near Mariannhill, has been charged with intent to do grievous bodily harm after two pupils alleged that he made five of them try to “run” on their knees on the road to punish them for being disruptive in his class on March 14.

The pupils, who had visible injuries to their legs, told the KwaNdengezi police last week they had been forced to shuffle on their knees on the road for about 10 minutes.

Bhekisisa Mncube, a spokesman for KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Peggy Nkonyeni, said on Sunday the department had issued a suspension notice for the teacher.

However, Mncube was not certain if the notice had been served on the teacher because he initally could not be found.

He said the department was happy the teacher was now in police custody.

“The case is now in the hands of the court,” Mncube said.
