Makgophong - The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo on Sunday again condemned in the strongest possible terms violent attacks perpetrated against elderly people, following another rape in a rural area.

"This condemnation follows the arrest of a 19-year-old boy for the gruesome incident of rape which occurred in the early hours of Saturday, at about [3:30am] at Makgophong village," Lt-Col Moatshe Ngoepe said.

"It is alleged a 64-year-old woman was attacked and raped by her nephew after she heard a knock at the door, and after opening she was surprised to find him (nephew) wearing only his underwear. He grabbed and throttled her until she fell unconscious and he subsequently raped her," Ngoepe said.

Family members were advised to ensure elderly care was prioritised and to avoid leaving elderly people "with boys or men to avoid this type of incidents from happening".

The suspect would appear in the local magistrate's court on Monday on a charge of rape. The police investigations were still continuing, Ngoepe said.
