A 13-year-old boy was due to appear on charges of attempted murder in the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Monday after allegedly trying to kill his mother by poisoning her tea.

According to the police, the boy from Protea Glen, Soweto, was caught on Friday night by his parents with R700 in his pockets.

“They also found poison in his pockets. When his parents took the money and poison away from him, he went out again and got some more poison,” said police spokesman Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

Later that night, after drinking tea, the mother started foaming at the mouth and her body started shaking. She was taken to Chris Hani-Baragwanath Academic Hospital, where she is in a critical condition.

Makhubela said the boy confessed to his father that he had put the poison in his mother’s tea.
