A tipster could be R20 000 richer after he put the three suspected killers of eight-year-old Junaid McKenzie behind bars.
Three weeks ago provincial police asked communities to shed light on who was responsible for the fatal shooting of little Junaid and wounding of Letecia Jacobs, 32. They offered a reward of R20 000 once the perpetrators are convicted.
The Daily Voice can reveal that cops now have three suspects behind bars.
And one of these suspects actually helped cops during “pointing out” procedures back at the scene of Junaid’s killing.
Gary Peters, 21, Moegamat Shafiek, 23, and Abubaker Kamaar, 26, made a brief appearance at the Wynberg Magistrates’ Court yesterday on murder and attempted murder charges.
All three are due back in the dock on September 10. Cops made a breakthrough in the case this week when a witness came forward with vital information.
Little Junaid was shot in the head while playing soccer outside his Melody Square home in Steenberg on June 27.
And police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirms police will reward the piemper if the men are convicted.
“The reward will be paid out on conviction of the accused,” Van Wyk tells the Daily Voice. Junaid’s sister Shamiela McKenzie, 23, tells the Daily Voice the family breathed a sigh of relief at the news.
“We heard one person was arrested and appeared in court today [Thursday],” she says. “The police brought the one here and he was pointing out to police where he was standing behind the bakkie.”
Junaid was the youngest victim of a gang war between rival gangs the Mongrels and Junky Funky kids.
A four-month blood battle left 13 people dead and 33 wounded in the greater Lavender Hill area. Sixteen gang members have since been arrested for the shootings.
