Gonubie, Eastern Cape -

Three men have been arrested in connection with the armed robbery and murder of a businessman at Mzamomhle in Gonubie, Eastern Cape police said on Wednesday.

They shot dead the 46-year-old owner of the Simunye spaza shop in Mzamomhle during a robbery on Monday, said Captain Steven Marais.

“A fight ensued between the robbers and the shop owner during the robbery and he was shot and killed,” he said. The men stole money and bread and fled.

Police were called to the scene by residents and opened murder and armed robbery dockets.

Investigations led to the arrest of the three men, all aged 19, and the recovery of an unlicensed firearm in Mzamomhle on Tuesday.

The men were expected to appear soon in the East London Magistrate's Court on charges of murder and armed robber.

This was the second armed robbery in the area on Monday.

Earlier that day, there was a shootout between three armed men and a truck driver who was on his way to deliver bread in Mzamomhle. The driver was wounded.

Police were investigating whether the men arrested were linked to this and other crimes in the area. - Sapa
