Cape Town - Three men arrested for allegedly robbing mountain biker Malcolm Fox at gunpoint – an event captured on Fox’s helmet-mounted GoPro camera – appeared in the Somerset West Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

They are Gershwin Mitchell, 20, Ashley Makundai, 22, and a 17-year-old who cannot be named. The minor is waiting to be moved from Pollsmoor to a place of safety.

The three face charges of robbery after allegedly taking Fox’s camera, car keys and bicycle.

National prosecuting authority spokesman Eric Ntabazalila said the case had been postponed so the investigating officer could find a place of safety for the minor.

“Presently he is being held at Pollsmoor prison as there are no places of safety readily available.

“It’s not clear for now whether the accused will apply for bail when the matter is back on the roll.”

On Saturday, May 31, after five years of avoiding his bike, Fox set off on a ride through a Somerset West wine farm, only to lose his way.

Soon afterwards he found himself facing three men and a gun.

The project manager for Virgin Active posted the GoPro footage on YouTube which quickly gained hundreds of views and comments.

It also led police to Sir Lowry’s Pass Village where they arrested the three suspects and recovered Fox’s stolen cellphone and mountain bike. Police also seized a Luger pistol from one of the men.

The matter has been postponed to Thursday.
