Johannesburg - Two men were arrested for attempting to bribe the Diepsloot station commander with R5 000, Johannesburg police said on Wednesday.

Spokesman Warrant Officer Daniel Mavimbela said the men aged 34 and 40 were arrested on Tuesday.

“The attempt to corrupt Colonel Amos Balatse reportedly started while Diepsloot police officers were facilitating in a dispute involving two local groups, which were battling over the control of a church in Diepsloot extension ten,” he said.

“One of the suspects is believed to have phoned the station commander on numerous occasions, and requested that he uses his power, to influence the outcome of the facilitation process.”

Mavimbela said that the provincial anti-corruption investigators were called and they set a “trap” for the two men.

The men were arrested shortly after they handed the money to Balatse.

They were charged with bribery and are expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court soon, he said.
