Two Mozambican nationals will appear in court after they were caught trying to sell explosives to an off duty police officer, North West police said on Sunday.

“They were arrested in Bapong village on Friday after they tried to convince a police officer to pay them R1500 for the explosives,” said Captain Amanda Funani.

The men, aged 22 and 32, will appear in the Garankuwa Magistrate's Court on Monday. The two were charged with unlawful possession of explosives.

Funani said the 32-year-old, who worked at the local Lonmin mine, told the police he stole the explosives from his employer.

“They led the police to their friend's spaza shop where more explosives were found hidden in a fridge.”

She said the explosives were usually used to bomb ATMs in and around the area. - Sapa
