Pietermaritzburg - Two men were arrested for allegedly robbing and assaulting a 33-year-old woman in Pietermaritzburg on Monday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

The woman was entering an office off Church Street in the CBD around midday when the two, both 19-years old, approached her, Colonel Jay Naicker said.

“The men allegedly grabbed the victim and pushed her against a wall and demanded her handbag,” Naicker said.

When she refused to hand it over, the men allegedly stabbed her in left hand and threatened to stab her in her stomach. The 33-year-old screamed for help. The men then grabbed her cellphone from her hand and fled.

With the help of CCTV footage and the police flying squad, the men were found in the CBD and arrested. A wallet, various bank cards and a knife, believed to have been used in the robbery, were found in the men's possession. The woman's cellphone was found near the scene of the robbery.

“Police believe that the suspects may be linked to other robberies in the city,” Naicker said.

The men are expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court soon.
