TWO HELD FOR TEENAGE RAPES

Two men accused of raping two teenage girls and leaving them for dead in Mavimbela, Katlehong, have been arrested, Ekurhuleni metro police said on Tuesday.

One of the men was arrested on Tuesday in Phuthaditjhaba, Free State, and the other was arrested on Monday in Katlehong, said Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago.

The girls, both aged 14, were found by residents of Mavimbela on Monday.

Kgasago said the girls appeared to have been raped, severely assaulted and left for dead in the bushes near the intersection of Khotso and Mambo streets in Katlehong.

"The residents were so incensed that they burnt the bushy open space and also blockaded streets in protest against the horrendous crime," he said.

The girls were being treated in hospital.

The men face charges of rape and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

One had been linked to other rapes in Katlehong in the past few weeks.

"Police are hot on the heels of the third suspect who is still at large and suspected to be holing up somewhere in Vereeniging," Kgasago said.
