Middelburg - A man was sentenced to two terms of life imprisonment on Friday for murder and rape, Mpumalanga police said.

Lunga William Zulu, 24, appeared in the Middelburg Circuit of the High Court in Pretoria for raping and killing two women in 2011 and 2012, Colonel Leonard Hlathi said.

On March 2, 2012, Landy Lindiwe Ntuli, 34, had asked Zulu and four other men to take her to town to withdraw money.

“On their way back, they drove to a 1/8dumping site 3/8 near Kriel, where all the men, including Zulu, took turns in raping her,” Hlathi said.

The men then robbed and assaulted her before crushing her head with a rock and leaving her for dead.

“Her body was recovered the following day by children... and the matter was brought to the attention of the police,” he said.

Zulu's body was found near a dumping site at Thubelihle Township in Kriel, near Middelburg.

The five men, including Zulu, were arrested. Four of the men were later acquitted because they could not be linked to DNA evidence.

Zulu was also found guilty of murdering of Nhlanhla Khoza.

Khoza's half-naked body was found in April, 2011, in the same area where Ntuli was killed.

“She had severe injuries on her body and was 16 weeks pregnant at that time. The High Court heard that Khoza was on her way home from a local tavern when she met Zulu,” Hlathi said.

Zulu was sentenced to 15 years for the murder of Khoza. His sentences would run concurrently.
