Two men were arrested for bribery and possession of dagga on the Kilmarnock gravel road, in the Ladybrand district, on Monday morning, Free State police said.

Patrolling police gave chase to a car with Gauteng number plates around 3.30am, said Sergeant Martin Xuma.

The driver lost control of the car and it came to a halt.

Police searched it and found 31 bags of dagga and 14 packs weighing 393.5kg, with an estimated street value of over half a million rand.

The dagga was believed to be destined for Pretoria, said Xuma.

The 29-year-old driver apparently phoned a friend, who went to the scene and offered the police R1700 to let him go.

Both men were arrested and were expected to appear soon in the Ladybrand Magistrate's Court. - Sapa
