Durban -

The murder of a teacher, allegedly for failing a pupil, was a shocking and callous act, the SA Democratic Teachers' Union (Sadtu) in KwaZulu-Natal said on Monday.

“We are deeply saddened and shocked at this callous act. This shows how our teachers are vulnerable because of lack of security,” Sadtu said in a statement.

Captain Thulani Zwane confirmed that a 52-year-old teacher was killed when she was allegedly shot at a school in the Mnyameni area, in Maphumulo.

“She died on the way to hospital and the motive of the killing is unknown at this stage,” he said. No arrests had been made.

Sadtu identified the victim as Maureen Lucky Khuzwayo and said she was murdered “execution style” because she failed a pupil.

“The gunman, who is believed to be related to the learner who failed, waited for all parents to leave, before he stormed into Mrs Khuzwayo's office and pumped two bullets into her stomach while asking her why did she fail that learner,” Sadtu said.

“Eyewitnesses said the gunman walked away and returned to shoot Mrs Khuzwayo in the head, execution style.”

Sadtu called for the arrest of the killer and an investigation. The union said some teachers had expressed reservations about returning to the school before the man was brought to justice. - Sapa
