Cape Town – Scores of demonstrators protested outside the Goodwood Magistrate's Court where Mortimer Saunders, charged with the rape and murder of three-year-old Courtney Pieters, made his first appearance on Wednesday morning.

Pieters went missing from her Elsies River, Cape Town, home nearly two weeks ago. Her body was discovered in Epping Industrial on Saturday night.

Her alleged killer was arrested on Sunday.

Saunders had rented a room in her home and was believed to be a close friend of Courtney's father.

Courtney's family was in the court on Wednesday morning.
