Durban - The IFP has called for the police to investigate “the paper trail” to find out why NFP leader Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi was keeping more than R500 000 in cash at her house and not in the bank.
KaMagwaza-Msibi’s daughter, Gugu Gumede, 22, and her domestic worker, were robbed at knifepoint at about 4am on Wednesday morning at their plush Somerset Park, Durban North, home.
The suspects entered the house through an open window and demanded the code for the safe, which they robbed, before turning the house upside down and escaping on foot.
Blessed Gwala, the leader of the IFP in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, on Thursday called for the police to bring the criminals to book and said the crime was indicative of the high crime levels in the province.
“It is fortunate that no one was harmed in this incident and we urge the SAPS to do everything in its power to apprehend those responsible,” he said.
“I would also call upon the SAPS to follow the paper trail to find out how was it that KaMagwaza-Msibi came to have about R500 000 in her house, where did she get such a sum of money from and why was the money not deposited in a bank for safe keeping?
“Does the Deputy Minister not trust the banking system in our country?” asked Gwala.
Speaking to the Daily News this morning, Gwala said as the Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, kaMagwaza-Msibi should be making use of banking technology such as electronic transfers and bank guaranteed cheques.
“Why would you have half a million in your house? It must be investigated which account this money has come from.
“Even if they say it was money for the party, should it not be in the possession of the treasurer-general?
“Which account has this money come from, politicians are not expected to handle so much cash because it does cause suspicion,” he said.
KaMagwaza-Msibi said the money was being kept in the safe to purchase a building at an auction for the party’s regional offices in Durban.
Captain Thulani Zwane said investigations were ongoing, and said two men aged 35 and 41 had been taken in for questioning on Thursday.
On Wednesday Gumede’s domestic worker and her boyfriend were taken in for questioning.
