Pretoria - A woman is in a critical condition after she was allegedly doused in petrol and set alight at an informal settlement in Pretoria, paramedics said on Monday.

The incident took place in the early hours of Sunday morning in the Atteridgeville / Kwaggasrand area.

Netcare spokesperson Nick Dollman said in a statement that paramedics were called to the scene and found the woman in a critical condition.

"Reports from the scene allege that the victim had been doused with a flammable liquid, believed to be petrol, and then set light.

"The woman, in her mid-thirties, had sustained severe burns and was in a critical condition requiring immediate intervention."

He confirmed that the woman was then attended by paramedics before being transported to the nearest hospital to receive medical care

Dollman said that the exact details surrounding the incident and the preceding events were not clear but would form part of a police investigation
