Johannesburg -

A woman was found guilty of animal cruelty by the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court on Thursday, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) said.

Mirriam Mofokeng was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment or a fine of R6 000 suspended for five years, spokesman Jaco Pieterse said.

Mofokeng was arrested in March last year for contravening the Animals Protection Act.

She failed to provide her dog with medical treatment and only took the dog for medical assistance a week after the incident.

“The dog had almost 60 percent burn wounds across her body, including her back, legs, genital areas and tongue,” said Pieterse.

The dog had to be euthanased due to the extent of the injuries. - Sapa
