Parliament – House robberies in South Africa have increased by 2.7 percent.

The Western Cape contributes significantly to this figure - there has been a 19.3 percent rise in this crime in the province.

This was according to Norman Sekhukhune, SA Police Service head of crime research and statistics, who was on Friday briefing MPs during the release of the 2015/16 crime stats in Parliament.

The so-called trio crimes (house robberies, business robberies and carjackings) increased by 0.2 percent, Sekhukhune said.

Business robberies rose by 2.8 percent compared to the 2014/15 stats, while car hijackings increased by 14.3 percent.

Attempted murders in South Africa were up by 3.4 percent while assault with the intent to do grievous bodily hard was up slightly by 0.2 percent.
