#CrimeStats - murder up by 4.9%

Parliament - The murder rate in South Africa has increased by 4.9 percent, according to the latest crime statistics.

“It still seems to be a problematic crime we are facing,” said Norman Sekhukhune, SA Police Service head of crime research and statistics, while briefing MPs during the release of the 2015/16 crime statistics in Parliament on Friday.

The only province which had seen a decrease in the murder rate was the Northern Cape.

“The rest of the provinces have shown increases ranging from 1.3 percent to 15.6 percent observed in Limpopo,” said Sekhukhune.

Sekhukhune also said that:

* Sexual offences went down 3.2% in the past year

* Attempted murder up 3.4% compared to the previous year

* Assault GBH was up 0.2% over the previous year

* Common assault went up 2% in the past year

* Robbery with aggravating circumstances up 2.7%in 2015/16

* Carjacking went up 14.3% compared to previous year.

* Robbery at residential up 2.7% in the past year

*  Robbery at non-residential up 2.8%
