Sentencing procedures for a mother from Eureka Estate who allowed her two-year-old child to be raped and tortured by skollies was postponed yesterday due to a Covid-19 infection at Parow Regional Court.
The 27-year-old woman, who cannot be named to protect her child’s identity, was found guilty alongside her friend Ursula Paste, 32, after the child was rescued from a drug den in 2019.
The duo were expected to return to court yesterday but officials said all cases had been postponed due to a Covid-19 infection and the matter was moved to 19 July.
The discovery by neighbour Debbie van Rensburg, 56, and her son Cisco, 27, sparked an uproar in the Cape Flats community when it was revealed that the little girl’s genitals were burnt, her tiny body bitten and her hair cut.
She was dubbed Baby Nadia and removed from her mother’s care while she recovered in hospital.
Initially Paste was arrested as the child’s mother claimed not to have known about the abuse, but after a second set of bite marks was found, cops and arrested her in the Malawi Camp informal settlement.
The two women were found not guilty of attempted murder and rape as they could not be linked directly to the crimes but throughout the trial they refused to piemp the gangsters who raped the child.
A determined Debbie said they will be back for the sentencing.
“They told us there is a Covid case and the case was postponed until 19 July but we are coming back to get justice for the baby,” she says.
