Pretoria - Staff at Kalafong Hospital have confirmed that disgraced athlete Oscar Pistorius is receiving treatment in a security ward at the facility after being rushed in on Saturday night for injuries sustained while he was alone in his cell.

The "Blade Runner" as he was affectionately known, was brought in and attended to in the emergency department before being admitted into a ward, over what correctional services have said was injuries sustained "when he fell off his bed".

Reports, sourced from correctional services officials, however are that the recently jailed Pistorius had attempted to slit his wrists.

They said he could have been attempting suicide since razor blades were found in his cell and bandages swathed his arms as he was rushed out.

Hospital staff said security was tight and information difficult to get.

"It is all hush-hush and only senior nurses and doctors being given access to the security section," said a nurse.

The health department however promised to check on the situation and report back to IOL on Pistorius' condition.
