Marikana - The Economic Freedom Party (EFF) is a party for change, a member said on Sunday.
“I support the nationalisation of the land without compensation. Land was taken from the Koi and the Nama people forcefully...The ANC is refusing to bring back the land back to us,” said Channon Merricks from Eldorado Park, south of Johannesburg.
He said he left in the morning to support party leader Julius Malema at the official launch of the EFF.
“We coloured people have not benefited from the ANC. Our forefathers were forcefully removed from their land. Our mothers can no longer sew because they had been put out of business by Chinese imports,” he said.
He wore a white T-shirt with “Juju boy” written on the chest.
He said the T-shirt was part of clothing to support the EFF.
Hundreds of EFF members gathered on top of a hill at Nkaneng informal settlement in Marikana on Sunday for the official launch of the EFF.
The hill was where Lonmin mineworkers gathered during their wage strike last year.
Forty-four people were killed during the strike - 34 mineworkers died when police fired on them on August 16, 2012, and ten including two security guards and two policemen were killed in the preceding week.
