Hanging basket record falls flat

An attempt to build and hang the world's largest hanging flower basket at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront has been called off because of difficulties in insuring the huge structure.

The V&A Waterfront planned to build the basket to commemorate the official start of spring at its annual Spring Flower Show and to set a world record.

The basket would have been filled with indigenous flowers.

But while the record attempt was called off, the flower show went ahead. It ends later today.

Maureen Thomson, spokesperson for the Waterfront, said the project was cancelled because of legal requirements the suppliers were unable to meet. There were also problems supplying documents required for insurance purposes.

The steel basket, 4m in diameter, 12m in circumference and weighing about three tons, would have have been suspended 4m above the ground at the Clock Tower precinct.

Thomson said : "While we had the necessary structural engineering safety clearance certificates, our insurers still required certain guarantees before they would undertake to insure a three-ton hanging basket.

"We have regretfully had to make the decision to cancel this attraction in the meantime but hope to meet this challenge in the future," she said.
