A great-grandfather aged 99 is divorcing his wife of 77 years after discovering she had an affair more than six decades ago.

He found dust-covered love letters from his wife, 96, to another man during a clear-out of their home.

The couple, who have been identified only as Antonio and Rosa of Rome, have consulted lawyers and their first hearing will take place in March.

Antonio and Rosa - who have five children, a dozen grandchildren and a great grandchild - tied the knot in 1934 in Naples, where they met after he joined the Carabinieri paramilitary police. But she had an affair with the unidentified lover ten years later.

Lawyer Anna Orecchioni said: “Antonio felt betrayed and unable to carry on with the marriage. It’s a shame.”
