Sydney -

Four of the five babies born to an Australian woman who already has 12 children are doing fine, Melbourne's Monash Medical Centre said on Wednesday.

“Sadly one of the babies did not survive despite the best efforts of medical staff,” the statement said.

The 48-year-old woman, who gave birth to three girls and two boys on Tuesday, conceived naturally.

The family did not want to be identified.

Doctors said the odds of conceiving quintuplets naturally are about one in 55 million. - Sapa-dpa
