Ankara - A man who broke into a doctor's surgery decided to take some pills he found there to treat his headache, and promptly fell into a deep sleep from which he was awakened by police the next morning, Turkish newspapers said on Thursday.

The reports said 27-year-old Ismail Saripinar, who was well known to the police in his home town of Denizli in the west of the country, was found fast asleep by a doctor who arrived to open the practice in the morning.

Police who arrived to deal with the intruder had considerable difficulty waking him up.

The would-be burglar had apparently swallowed some tranquillisers he had found in the surgery, hoping to cure his headache. The papers said he was also found with the equivalent of €200 (about R1 500) that he had taken from the premises. - Sapa-AFP
