Cape Town - Eskom is going to court to get Gupta-linked Trillian to pay back R600 million it paid to it.

This was after McKinsey had paid back the power utility R1 billion.

Senior officials from Eskom told MPs on Tuesday they need this money from Trillian. The power utility is trying to balance its books and needs every available cash.

Eskom Chief Executive Phakamani Hadebe said they decided on the legal challenge against Trillian because it needs this money.

“From McKinsey, we have recovered R1bn. In December, we are going to court to face up with Trillian to demand our R600m,” said Hadebe.

Eskom is under serious financial pressure and has been urged by MPs to make every means possible to get its money back from the Gupta-linked company.

In the hearings during the Eskom inquiry in Parliament a few months ago, McKinsey had said it was willing to pay back the money.

But Trillian had not issued a word on whether it would pay the power utility back.

This resulted in McKinsey to pay back R1bn. But some MPs demanded that McKinsey must also pay back the interest of R300m.
