Bloemfontein - Frozen food items with four-year-old expiry dates were removed from several Trompsburg shops in a police raid, Free State police said on Thursday.

“At the main supermarket, food which had expired four years ago (2010) was still packed inside the fridges. Even infant milk was still sold to people,” Sergeant Ikobeng Hlubi said.

The Free State health department, home affairs and police raided eight shops in Trompsburg in a surprise operation on Wednesday.

Hlubi said recently police received several complaints about expired goods that were bought at local shops and the owners refusing to exchange them. Police found expired food at every shop they visited. The expired goods were confiscated and destroyed at a dump site.
