Thohoyandou - Five shops were destroyed after a fire broke out at a shopping centre in Thohoyandou, Limpopo police said on Monday.

"A passerby noticed huge flames of fire covering shops at [the] Mutsindo complex next to the Thohoyandou Spar last night [Sunday night] and summoned the police and firefighters," said spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe.

"The firefighters tried to extinguish the fire with no success as it had already covered a large area. A total of five shops were gutted with everything inside totally destroyed."

Ngoepe said damages were estimated at R2 million.

Police investigation continued.
