Four people have been arrested in connection with the murder of four-year-old Iyapha Yamile, who was found stuffed in a plastic bag near her aunt’s house in Town Two Khayelitsha at the weekend.

Iyapha had gone missing while playing with friends on Sunday afternoon. The last time her family saw her was when Iyapha came from church with her mother. They had visited her aunt who lived in the neighbouring Zone 14 .

A search was launched and her body was found by a neighbour during the early hours on Monday.

The family had suspected that Iyapha may have been raped as the plastic bag she was found in had blood.

In a statement on Tuesday, police spokesperson Noloyiso Rwexana said: “Lingelethu police arrested four suspects aged between 20 and 30 years following the discovery of the body of a girl in Town Two, Khayelitsha yesterday (on Monday) morning who was reported missing Sunday April 2017.

“A murder case has been opened at Lingelethu SAPS for investigation by the Khayelitsha FCS.”

Rwexana would not say when the suspects will appear in court.
