Port Elizabeth - A Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality ward councillor has been arrested by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) for fraud and corruption.

Hawks spokesperson Captain Anelisa Feni said 41-year-old Bongo Brian Nombiba was arrested on Monday by the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime unit.

According to police, Nombiba appeared before the Port Elizabeth Specialised Commercial Crimes court on the same day.

“It is alleged that during 2014, Nombiba assisted a non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in KwaZakhele, Port Elizabeth, to acquire a donation valued at an undisclosed amount from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

“After the NGO was awarded with this amount, he allegedly, fraudulently, claimed a portion of the amount from the NGO.”

Feni said that Nombiba was released on warning by the court and his next court appearance is on January 26.
