Johannesburg – The year 2015 saw the highest number of candidates sit for matric examinations since 1994, the department of basic education said on Tuesday.

Director general Mathanzima Mweli said 644,536 grade 12 pupils wrote exams, the highest in 21 years.

“KwaZulu-Natal had the highest [number of] candidates, followed by Gauteng and then Limpopo. This shows an increasing number of enrolments for the NSC (National Senior Certificate),” he said.

Mweli presented the department’s 2015 technical report on the exams in Midrand, Johannesburg.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga would present the results later on Tuesday.

The country’s top performers were at the event where Motshekga had earlier hosted a breakfast event to congratulate them.
