Durban - The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is investigating the death of a businesswoman after a car chase with police in Umkomaas, KwaZulu-Natal.

“A docket of murder and defeating the ends of justice has been opened,” Ipid spokesman Moses Dlamini said on Wednesday.

A group of policemen in three vehicles, two of them marked, saw a woman driving recklessly on Sunday night and allegedly tried to stop her. The 45-year-old woman apparently sped off and a car chase ensued.

“The policemen fired shots at the woman's vehicle. She lost control of the vehicle and it overturned. The woman died on the scene,” he said.

The policemen reported the accident and allegedly concealed the fact that they had fired at her car.

“When the vehicle was towed away, the station commander noticed bullet holes in the vehicle and he called the suspects and tried to get clarity. They could not give a reasonable explanation for the shooting,” he said.

The station commander informed the Ipid. No arrests had been made.
