Isidingo star Arno Marais made a brief first appearance in the Pretoria Regional Court on Friday after a car accident more than two years ago claimed a young man’s life.

Marais, 28, known for his role as bad boy Benjamin le Roux in the soapie, faces charges of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving after he was notified last month he would be prosecuted.

Marais, dressed in black, looked nervous as he stood in the dock.

He was supported by family members and friends in the public gallery.

It is alleged Marais skipped a red light on the night of July 28, 2010, and caused a fatal accident in Centurion, which claimed the life of 19-year-old Kobus Venter. The case was postponed to October 19 for disclosure.

At the time of the accident, newspapers reported Marais spent six weeks drifting in and out of a coma after the accident.

He had sustained a severe head injury which caused brain damage and he could not recall the day before or after the accident.

It was reported he returned to the Isidingo set only seven months later after a battle with depression.
