Johannesburg - A four-year-old boy drowned in a swimming pool at a home in Helderkruin, west of Johannesburg on Sunday evening, paramedics said.

ER24 paramedics were called to the scene by a local security company and arrived at 7.35pm, ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said.

On arrival, paramedics found a security officer performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the child near the pool. Paramedics immediately took over CPR efforts and advanced life support interventions were also initiated in an effort to revive the boy.

"Unfortunately, after 45 minutes, no vital signs returned and the boy was declared dead. It is understood that a family member had found the child floating in the pool and immediately pulled him out. A security member arrived on the scene and immediately began CPR. Local authorities were on [the] scene for further investigations," Meiring said.
