Johannesburg - Police in Johannesburg arrested a 34-year-old man in the CBD after he was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Johannesburg police's Captain Xoli Mbele said community patrollers assisted the Johannesburg Central Police in the capture of the man at the corner of Goud and Jeppe Streets at around 6:30 on Friday morning.

According to police, the community patrollers were on duty in the neighbourhood when they spotted three suspicious-looking men at the corner of Bree and Troy streets. The patrollers alerted police and followed the suspects as they fled, but one was arrested by police who had arrived on the scene.

A check of the weapon's serial number showed that it had been taken from a 54-year-old man during a robbery reported to the Johannesburg Central police station on July 13.

The suspect is due to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court.
