Cape Town - The mother of rape and murder accused Johannes Kana was shocked to hear his confession in the Swellendam Circuit Court to raping Bredasdorp teenager Anene Booysen.
Anene was found in the early hours of February 2 with her intestines hanging out.
She later died in hospital.
On Thursday prosecutor Maria Marshall read out the statement Kana made to the police on February 10.
According to the confession, the night on which Anene was raped and murdered at a Bredasdorp construction site started with a party at a friend’s home.
At about 1am on February 2, the party then moved to a local pub, Kallies.
Kana and about five friends found Anene at the pub. They continued drinking and they danced.
After a few drinks Anene and Kana decided to leave the pub and walk towards the home of her foster mother, Corlia Olivier.
Along the way they stopped to kiss, but Anene pushed him away.
Ignoring her protests Kana pulled down her pants, kicked her and raped her.
He then ran away.
Outside court a relative, Pieter Kana, said Johannes Kana had not told the family he had raped Anene and that they firmly believed in his innocence.
“His mother is very shocked,” he told reporters outside court as Johannes Kana’s mother, Lena Rickers, looked on.
“We feel hurt that he has to stand alone (for rape and murder) when there were others arrested and released,” said Pieter Kana.
“Also, what about Anene saying that it was Zwai (when she was) on her deathbed? We think he made a statement about something he didn’t do.”
He added that Johannes Kana was someone who did not like to see women being abused.
Before Anene died in hospital on February 2 she used the name “Zwai”, and said five or six men had been involved in the attack.
Charges against Kana’s co-accused, Jonathan “Zwai” Davids, were dropped earlier this year after the State could find no DNA evidence to link him to the crime.
On Wednesday paramedic Wickus Kiewietz told the court he had been sent to the scene of the attack.
He said that when he arrived Anene looked as if she was in a lot of pain. He had noticed blood on her legs and that her intestines were hanging out. Anene had kicked and hit out at the medics, not wanting them to touch her.
Kiewietz pointed out where he had found Anene - between houses at Asla site B - during an in loco inspection in Bredasdorp.
Witness Chrisna Mentoor earlier described Anene as happy and laughing on the night she left Kallies pub with Kana.
The trial continues on Friday.
