A Bangladeshi businessman is safe after being kidnapped and held captive for five days.
The owner of Central Supa Savers in Ravensmead was abducted during a robbery at the store last Tuesday.
Sources say six armed men stormed the store and raided the tills.
The victim, whose identity is being protected, was released after his family paid a ransom on Sunday afternoon.
Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk says: “This office can confirm that the mentioned person has been reunited with his family.
“According to the family, an undisclosed amount of ransom money was paid by the family to the alleged kidnappers [on Sunday] afternoon.
“Kidnapping and business robbery cases were registered for investigation, but no one has been arrested at this stage. The investigation continues.”
When the Daily Voice visited the area, the owner’s family was standing at the shop speaking with the police, who advised them not to speak to the media.
A relative would only confirm the man was kidnapped and they did not know who was behind it.
The kidnapping is the latest in a string of abductions of local and foreign businessmen in recent years.
Crime fighter Hanif Loonat says it was a common trend for criminals to target Chinese, Bangladeshi and Ethiopian business people.
Speaking about the latest incident, he said: “The abductors set a dog on him, he has dog bites all over his body. His fingers have deep cuts and his head has a big cut. He is just swollen up and in pain."
He said the man was in hospital.
Loonat said business owners were soft targets: “We are speaking of a man with two small shops. The family had to borrow money for his release. He is a married man and has two children, he is just trying to put bread on the table.
“These kidnappers will now make a business of taking local people. These people that are doing this must be taken out of our society and they must wear overalls. We are fed up and the government must really step up and do something about this.”
