Johannesburg - The murder of lesbian Duduzile Zozo was brutal, senseless and unacceptable, Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane said on Tuesday.

“We urge the community to approach police with any information that will lead to the arrest of people responsible for this barbaric act, so that they can face the full might of the law,” Mokonyane said in a statement.

The half-naked body of 26-year-old Zozo was discovered in Thokoza, Ekurhuleni, on Sunday.

Her mother Thuziwe Zozo reportedly said she suspected her daughter was killed because of her sexuality.

Mokonyane said there was no place for people who disregarded the country's national pride of unity in diversity and infringed other people's right to human dignity and freedom of association.

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Zozo family. Our prayers are with you,” she said.

The Congress of SA Trade Unions expressed its outrage at violence against women and homosexuals.

“Cosatu is outraged at the continuing high level of violence against women and girls, and demands that no effort be spared to arrest whoever was responsible for this despicable murder,” spokesman Patrick Craven said in a statement. - Sapa
