Bela Bela - Limpopo police on Monday said a manhunt had been launched for four awaiting trial prisoners who escaped from the Bela Bela police station on Sunday.

This after five men escaped at 10pm from the station's police cells.

Police, however, managed to rearrest the one escapee, Clifford Cleo Mutonhon, shortly after his escape attempt on the police station grounds.

All five suspects were arrested for an armed robbery that took place on the N1 freeway between Pienaarsrivier and Bela Bela.

It is unclear how the five managed to escape police cells.

The four remaining suspects are: Silence Dube, 29; Philani Sithole, 30; Thabang Dube, 30 and Joshua Mogashoa.

The daring escape comes hardly a month after, 20 awaiting trial prisoners managed to escape while being escorted to the Johannesburg Correctional Services from the Johannesburg Magistrates' Court.
