Johannebsurg - A magistrate has been arrested in Midrand for allegedly trying to extort R150 000 from a Botswana national, the Hawks said on Thursday.

“The 54-year-old magistrate wanted the money from the man in return for influencing an extradition appeal,” spokesman Paul Ramaloko said.

The magistrate was arrested minutes after accepting the money.

The Midrand Magistrate's Court later ordered that the man be extradited to his home country to face fraud charges involving R20 million.

“He will appear in the same court tomorrow (Friday) to face corruption charges,” Ramaloko said.
