Johannesburg -

A manhunt has been launched for three men who killed a Pretoria student and robbed her mother on their way back from the airport, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.

The female student and a male friend had picked up her mother from OR Tambo International Airport on Sunday evening, said spokeswoman Captain Colette Weilbach.

“They saw a white Opel Astra vehicle that had followed them and stopped behind them in the driveway in Newlands.

“The male friend, who was driving, tried to get away but did not succeed because the other vehicle blocked them in. Three unknown armed men approached the male friend and pointed a firearm at him,” said Weilbach.

The men forced the driver out of the vehicle and ordered him to open the boot. They took the mother’s luggage, jewellery and $1 000 (about R11 000) from the boot.

The female student asked the robbers not to take her mother's passport, after which one of the robbers asked her why she was talking to him.

The man then shot her. She was declared dead on arrival at a nearby hospital.

Weilbach said no one had been arrested.
