Johannesburg - A manhunt has been launched for a gang allegedly behind the robbery of a cash-in-transit van on the N1, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place on Monday night at the Buccleuch interchange at around 8pm.

The incident resulted in the closure of the N1 North.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini explained that several men, driving between 3-4 cars approached the vehicle while it was enroute.

"The suspects then shot at the wheel of the car, forcing it to stop. After it stopped, they then took out explosives and bombed the vehicle," he said.

The suspects then took several boxes containing an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene, Dlamini said.

No injuries or deaths were reported and Dlamini confirmed that a manhunt has since been launched for the suspects.
