Berlin - German Chancellor Angela Merkel has welcomed Time magazine's decision to award the women of the #MeToo movement who spoke out about sexual assault in recent weeks with its "Person of the Year" award.

"We have them to thank for the courage to break the silence over sexual assault and for the global debate that has ensued," Merkel's spokesman, Steffen Seibert, quoted her as saying on Twitter.
