Mitchell's Plain cops nab 484 suspects

Cape Town – Police officers in the Mitchell’s Plain cluster, in Cape Town, arrested 484 suspects in various anti-crime operations this week, Western Cape police said on Sunday.

Altogether 223 people were arrested for possession of drugs – 64 were wanted suspects – and 21 for crimes against women and children, SA Police Service spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said in a statement.

Other suspects were arrested for, among other things, housebreaking and theft, assault, possession of presumed stolen property, and traffic violations. All the arrests were made during visible patrols, tracing operations, and vehicle check points.

Officers visited 859 spaza shops, searched 87 houses for drugs, and conducted four roadblocks.

Drugs confiscated during the various operations included 222.17g of heroin, 757.82 units of tik, 17 558 mandrax tablets, and 856.59g of dagga.

Ten shebeen operations were conducted and 1359.66 litres of liquor confiscated, two stolen motor vehicles were recovered, and eight illegal firearms were confiscated, Van Wyk said.

Mitchell’s Plain cluster commander Maj-Gen Gregory Goss said police would continue clamping down on crime and criminal activities and bring the perpetrators to justice.

He applauded all officers who participated during these operations, including members of other law enforcement agencies.
