Johannesburg - A Kenyan man died after being assaulted by a group of youths who accused him of being infected with the coronavirus, local publication The Star reported.

The killing took place in Kibundani Village, Kwale County.

County police commander Joseph Ntshenge said George Hezron was returning home after drinking on Tuesday night when a mob attacked him.

Ntshenge said the attackers argued with Hezron before assaulting him, claiming he had the coronavirus.

"Someone reported that the attackers saw the man staggering. They approached him, started an argument and beat him up," Nthenge said.

Hezron was rushed to Msambweni Subcounty Referral Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. His body was taken to Kwale mortuary.

Nthenge said investigations were continuing and no arrests had been made.

The police commander warned people against raising false alarms over the virus.

Kenya has so far confirmed seven case of Covid-19.
