Lentegeur Police are investigating an inquest case following the death of a 46-year-old mother of three who died in a fire at her double storey home in Hyde Park, Mitchells Plain.
The incident occurred on Saturday at 5am, says SAPS’ Joseph Swartbooi who confirms: “Upon arrival, police found the body of a female burnt beyond recognition.”
According to neighbour Julian Williams, 59, the victim, Felicia Carelse, was with her husband and 27-year-old daughter when the fire broke out.
“The fire spread so quickly but we could see her husband run down and talking to his daughter who was screaming for her mommy. He then pushed his vehicle out as the fire spread,” says Julian.
“He then shouted that the wife’s body fell from the roof. It was a devastating situation. The daughter was inconsolable and we are all still in shock.
“Luckily the two young ones did not sleep at home that night,” adds Julian.
No one was home when Daily Voice visited the house on Sunday.
Fire and Rescue Services Jermaine Carelse says the fire was extinguished at about 7am.
“When firefighters arrived at the scene of the fire in Weltevreden Road, they found a double-storey house ablaze and were informed that there was a person inside. The body of the woman, aged 46, was found at 5.18am,” he says.
“A building inspector was requested to ascertain the structural integrity of the dwelling.
“The cause of the fire is unknown and the scene was handed over to the SAPS.”
