Johannesburg - Motorists are being targeted by criminals who override vehicle remote locking, Eastern Cape police said on Friday.
“Criminals are using remote control devices to override the remote vehicle security systems. This enables them to gain access to the vehicle and to remove and steal property left inside the vehicle,” said Captain Andre Beetge.
“The SA Police Service in Port Elizabeth is issuing a warning to the public to be alert when locking their vehicles with remote controls.”
He said a number of incidents had been reported.
“The public is requested to check vehicle doors by hand after locking them with remote controls.”
“This is especially... when you are unable to hear the clicking sound or see the flashing of headlights associated with the remote locking of a car,” Beetge said.
He also cautioned homeowners who use remotes for gates and garage doors to check them before driving away.
